"Great Rioja, as traditional as it gets, in good quantity and moderate (and often plain great) prices.”  Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate

"Solid value is the rule here, from top to bottom.  The entry-level wines are among Rioja's best values."   Josh Raynolds, Vinous

La Rioja Alta's Gran Reserva 904, 2016 is now released, following Vina Ardanza Reserva 2019 earlier this year.

Renowned for its commitment to quality and tradition, La Rioja Alta's name has become synonymous with excellence. Their Gran Reserva wines are the pinnacle of traditional Rioja winemaking, made only in the best years, from a selecton of the finest grapes.  Aged in American oak for extended periods (4 years for 904) and almost the same in bottle, before being released onto the market when they approach drinking at around ten years of age.  Spicy and elegant, with the balance and structure that means that they will keep for years to come.  These are astonishing complex wies of sensual complexity and depth, and offer great value in the world of fine wine!

Benchmark classical Rioja known for its finesse, remarkable savoury complexity as well as ageing potential.

"No 2018 was produced, so after the 2017 I tasted last year, we jumped to the 2019 Viña Ardanza Reserva, produced with a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha.

2019 is a very good year for them, a small crop of powerful and concentrated wines when they produced all their brands, an exception. This is spicy, structured, balanced and powerful in this warm year, reaching the customary 14.5% alcohol and keeping a pH of 3.54 and 5.5 grams of acidity. It's still very young and undeveloped, with the classical profile, generous in American oak aromas and flavors that should slowly integrate in the wine with years in bottle. For them, 2019 means a change in Ardanza, less spicy (but still quite spicy, with clove, vanilla and tobacco leaves) and with more fresh fruit from the Garnacha. But the year is a modern version of 2015."  2025-2038

About the Producer
One of Rioja's most famous wineries, La Rioja Alta estate was established in 1890 in Haro, with all of their vineyards in Rioja Alta, as the name suggests!  La Rioja Alta has a long-held reputation for producing some of the region's best wines across the range.  Wines are made in the traditional Rioja style, using exclusively American oak.  Racking is done by hand by candlelight to ensure supple tannins and savoury flavours (one of a handful of Rioja producers still to use this technique).

Wines offered In Bond UK, excluding duty & VAT.  Available May/June 2025.
