2016 SAFFREDI

SAffredi 2016

Following a big upgrade from Antonio Galloni this week  (and James Suckling too) we are pleased to offer our last few cases of 'the Lafite of Tuscany'.

Still at opening price, Saffredi is where Tignanello was a few years ago, recognised as a consistent Tuscan star and offering brilliant value for collectors and drinkers. Significantly cheaper than its peers in the vintage, Galloni ranks it higher than the mighty Sassicaia (97 AG - £1150/6) and Ornellaia (96+ AG, £850/6). This is a fabulous wine!

Described by James Suckling as "A glorious Saffredi", the 2016 receives 99 points, upgraded from 96-97 previously. Revising his review from 93-96 to 98, Antonio Galloni considers these "some of the most impressive wines I have ever tasted from Le Pupille. Proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti and winemaker Luca D’Attoma have really found the sweet spot for a number of these wines by focusing on gentler vinifications and lowering the overt influence of oak. The results are obvious. All I can say is: Wow!"

The Background
A wine described by James Suckling as 'a benchmark in Tuscany's Maremma region'', the first vintage of Le Pupille's Saffredi was 1985, at which time it was a small winery with just 6 hectares of vineyards. Christian Le Sommer, former winemaker at Chateau Latour, took over winemaking at the property in 2000.  Saffredi is aged for 15-18 months in 100% new barrels and is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot from a single vineyard on the hillside of the Tuscan coast near the city of Grosseto.

£337 per 6x75 IB

"Incredible aromas of dark berries, lavender, rosemary, licorice and dried flowers. Spice. Full body and fantastic tannin texture with great length. Goes on for minutes. Muscular yet wonderfully formed and refined. A glorious Saffredi. Drink in 2022."
99 James Suckling

"The 2016 Saffredi is even better from bottle than it was from barrel - and that is saying a lot. A ton, in fact. Soaring in its concentration and scale, the 2016 boasts superb intensity in all of its dimensions. Readers who want to understand how magical the 2016 is will find the answer here. Macerated dark cherry, espresso, mint, lavender and leather add layers of nuance, but it is the wine's inner sweetness and extraordinary balance that stand out most. The 2016 is a pure and total pleasure bomb; that's all there is to it. Drink 2024-2041."
