AALTO 2017s (94 WA)

Aalto Winery

Aalto was founded with the aim of making a great Ribera del Duero, equal to the world’s best.

Mariano Garcia, former winemaker of Vega Sicilia, and local regulator Javier Zaccagnini used their knowledge of the finest old vine plots of Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) to make Aalto, and quickly established it as one of the leading Spanish wineries.

Aalto is in high demand in many markets and shines in 2017 (94 WA), balanced and fresh with dark fruit and sweet spice.  PS (Pagos Seleccionados) is made in tiny quantities, from low yields - a much more powerful style with riper fruit and ample oak.

Now a benchmark for the region with a strong following, Aalto produces consistently excellent wines that offer outstanding value on release.
The estate controls 130 hectares of old indigenous Tinto Fino vines ranging between 40 and 100 years old with with very low yields. The estate's stunning state of the art gravity-flow winery allows for meticulous detail in their winemaking.

"Aalto is a masterclass in the art of blending as much as terroir expression. The “PS” is only produced in the finest vintages from the best plots, which Javier analogized to picking the best players for the Spanish football team."

AALTO 2017, Bodegas Aalto
£130 per 6x75 IB

"The 2017 Aalto was a surprise for the vintage. It feels a little lighter and fresher, more approachable at this point in time. The oak also seems to be more integrated. It's a very drinkable Aalto in its style. They only used some 20% new oak and possibly did a softer vinification. It's approachable now, but it should also develop nicely in bottle, as the year had more acidity. Drink 2020-2025."

PS (PAGOS SELECCIONADOS) 2017, Bodegas Aalto
£320 per 6x75 IB

"I saw more ripeness and a higher impact of the élevage in the 2017 PS compared with the regular Aalto. The year was quite challenging, and they had less grapes but more or less from the same villages: La Aguilera, La Horra, Baños... It's spicy, smoky and toasty, very exuberant and showy, ripe and powerful. The wine went through malolactic in oak and matured in new barriques until bottling. There are plenty of tannins and oak-related flavors. This has a very specific style: ripe, powerful and generously oaked. Drink 2022-2028."
