Burgundy 2018: ARLAUD

Arlaud.jpg

A leading light in Morey Saint Denis, Domaine Arlaud boasts an enviable selection of vineyards in the Côte de Nuits.

Set up in the early 1940s by Joseph Arlaud, it is now run by his grandson Cyprien who has overseen a move towards more delicate and precise wines that express their respective terroir.  The use of new oak has gradually been reduced and the estate was certified organic in 2010 and biodynamic in 2014.

"Having visited Domaine Arlaud for almost a decade now, I must say straight from the off that Cyprien Arlaud's 2018s rank among the best that I have tasted."

GEVREY CHAMBERTIN 2018
£195 per 6x75 IB
"This too is very firmly reduced yet the underlying fruit appears to be ripe. Otherwise there is a bit more volume to the delicious, intense and lightly stony medium-bodied flavors that exhibit fine depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finale. Drink 2025+"

MOREY ST DENIS 2018
£195 per 6x75 IB

Premiers Cru

"The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru offers plenty of brambly black fruit laced with crushed stone and pressed violets on the nose; scents of blood orange develop with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, more flesh than some of Arlaud’s other Premier Crus and an irresistible, effervescent, blood-orange-infused finish. Superb.  Drink 2023-2048."

"The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru includes around 30% whole bunch and is matured in 20% new oak. This has a reserved but detailed bouquet, not as charming as Arlaud’s Chambolles but conveying a wonderful sense of mineralité. The palate is very detailed, with fine tannins that frame the layers of black cherry and raspberry fruit, and segues into a slightly peppery, very harmonious finish. This is wonderfully composed. Drink 2023-2048"

Grands Crus
£650 per 6x75 IB
"The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is made with 30% whole bunch and 20% new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet with iris and incense aromas infusing the black cherry and cassis fruit, quite opulent and yet remaining nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and quite citrus-like in style, although it relinquishes a little precision as it nears the finish. Drink 2023-2040."
