Burgundy 2018: WILLIAM FEVRE

Fevre Vaudesir.jpg

We are very pleased to begin with one of Chablis’ benchmark producers, whose wines are hugely successful in 2018.

Under the auspices of head winemaker Didier Seguier, Domaine William Fevre has really flourished; they have a fantastic record of producing fresh terroir-driven wines with excellent Chablis character.  The range is hugely impressive at every level, from everyday village Chablis, across Premier Crus vineyards and up to some very special, racy Grands Crus.

“In terms of vintage style, 2018 doesn’t really fit neatly into any one bucket. In Chablis, some vignerons suggested 2017, others 2009 or 2012 and still others 2005. For the history buffs and/or lovers of older whites, Vincent Dauvissat reached way back to invoke high ripeness high volume legendary vintages such as 1947 or 1959. It reminds me somewhat of the 1992 vintage for a variety of reasons that include the vaguely exotic fruit profiles, large volumes, relatively ripe lower acid flavors and high seductive and charming finishes. While it remains to be seen if such a comparison is apt, the 1992s aged far better than anyone initially gave them credit for and I suspect that while the 2018s will mature relatively quickly, I also suspect that they will hold for a long time thanks to the abundance of supporting dry extract.”
Allen Meadows, Burghound

Burghound’s top scoring Chablis of the vintage are Fevre’s Grands Crus:  Les Clos (93-95) and Les Preuses (93-95), with the racy, intense and “super-saline” Bouguerots awarded 92-94. These offer undeniable excellent value when judged against the appellation’s star producers Dauvissat and Raveneau (notably, the Wine Advocate rates them equal to Raveneau’s Les Clos).   The Premier Cru highlights for us were Vaillons (£155 per 6)  and Montee de Tonnerre (£225 per 6), for their appealing minerality and super clean zesty fruit.  Vaulorent is also which is excellent at its price level and is practically grand cru quality - no surprise as it sits directly next to grand cru Les Preuses with only a small path separating them.

Fresh, tensile wines that are classical in style have been the watchword at the 78-hectare Domaine William Fèvre for more than a decade ... Even at this early stage, the 2018s look like a success, and director Didier Séguier and his team richly deserve all the accolades they've received for achieving such consistent quality on such an important scale."

Villages

CHABLIS 2018
£75 per 6x75 IB
"The 2018 Chablis (Domaine) is beautifully layered, perfumed and expressive. White flowers, mint and orchard fruit all grace this silky, inviting Chablis from Fèvre. The Chablis emerges from a mix of 46 hectares of vineyards with an average age of 50 years. A touch of oak (5-7%, all neutral) adds a shade of complexity. In this rich vintage, the village Chablis is especially fine."

Premiers Cru

CHABLIS VAILLONS 1er Cru 2018
£155 per 6x75 IB
"A cool, pure and citrus-tinged nose speaks of oyster shell, iodine and discreet green apple nuances. There is a fine sense of energy to the crisp, minerally and racy flavors that deliver solid length on the bone dry finish that already displays very good complexity. Lovely stuff and worth checking out. Drink 2025+"
90-92 Burghound (90-92 WA)

CHABLIS MONTMAINS 1er Cru 2018
£160 per 6x75 IB
"A more elegant and quite floral suffused nose evidences a lovely array of classic Chablis elements on the mostly white orchard fruit aromas. I very much like the intensity and detail of the medium weight flavors that display a mild touch of sweetness on the sappy finale. This too isn’t especially complex though it may add more with time. Drink 2024+"
88-91 Burghound (89-91 WA)

CHABLIS MONT DE MILIEU 1er Cru 2018
£195 per 6x75 IB
"A beautifully fresh and ripe nose; indeed this is ripe to the point that there is a hint of exoticism to the pretty nose of tidal pool, pear, apple and tangerine nuances. There is good verve and volume to the textured medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced and lingering finish that coats the palate with dry extract. This is excellent and while there is a touch of warmth, it’s not enough to materially detract from the overall sense of balance. Drink 2026+"
90-93 Burghound (91-93 WA)

CHABLIS FOURCHAUMES 1er Cru 2018
£195 per 6x75 IB
"The nose is overtly floral in character with background nuances of oyster shell, iodine and wet stone. The impressively rich, concentrated and powerful medium weight plus flavors possess excellent intensity that carries over to the complex, long, dry and focused finale. This is, in a word, terrific. Drink 2026+"
91-93 Burghound

CHABLIS MONTEE DE TONNERRE 1er Cru 2018
£225 per 6x75 IB
"An elegant, pure and relatively airy nose combines plenty of Chablis typicity with notes of white orchard fruit, citrus, algae and iodine wisps. There is very good minerality and delineation to the lacy and refined yet punchy flavors that deliver sneaky good length where the intensity really builds from the mid-palate to the driving finish. Drink 2026+"
91-94 Burghound (91-93+ WA)

CHABLIS VAULORENT 1er Cru 2018*
£225 per 6x75 IB
"Séguier calls this their “baby grand cru” as specific barrels are selected for vine age, concentration and power). Not surprisingly this is aromatically similar to the Fourchaume though here there is a whiff of wood in evidence. The slightly sleeker and finer medium-bodied flavors possess good power and punch while remaining refined and composed on the impressively long and well-balanced finale. Drink 2026+"
91-93 Burghound (91-93+ WA)

Grands Crus

CHABLIS VAUDESIR Grand Cru 2018
£350 per 6x75 IB
"An exuberantly fresh and cool and mildly exotic nose offers up unmistakable Chablis character that includes sea breeze, iodine and oyster shell along with an abundance of citrus elements. There is equally good freshness and verve to the utterly delicious, crisp and delineated medium-bodied flavors that possess fine persistence and a lovely minerality on the notably dry but not austere finale where the wood resurfaces. This almost delicate effort will need a year or so to digest the oak treatment but this too is very promising. Drink 2028+"
92-94 Burghound (92-94 WA)

CHABLIS LES PREUSES Grand Cru 2018
£350 per 6x75 IB
"The 2018 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru is a super-classic expression of this site. Bright, punchy and intensely mineral, the Preuses possesses off-the-charts intensity and exceptional balance, all with the crystalline purity that is the signature of the very best wines from this site. Lemon peel, slate, mint, crushed rocks, white pepper and flowers build into the explosive, palate-staining finish. What a magnificent wine this is."
95-97 Antonio Galloni (93-95 BH, 93-95 WA)

CHABLIS BOUGROS COTE BOUGUEROTS Grand Cru 2018*
£390 per 6x75 IB
"The 2018 Chablis Bougros Côte Bouguerots Grand Cru is a dense, powerful and richly textured wine endowed with tremendous power. Rich yellow orchard fruit, crushed rocks, citrus and floral notes infuse a dense, potent Chablis that marries fruit richness and intense minerality. Ample and dramatic in its tremendous scale, the 2018 is compelling, sensual and racy - wow."
94-96 Antonio Galloni (92-94 BH, 93-95 WA)

CHABLIS LES CLOS Grand Cru 2018*
£450 per 6x75 IB
"The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is a powerful, beautifully layered wine. Mint wild flowers and chamomile accents add complexity to the lemon confit fruit. Creamy and ample on the palate, the 2018 is an especially rich Clos endowed with notable textural depth and a real feeling of seamlessness. I loved it."
94-96 Antonio Galloni (93-95 BH, 93-95 WA)
