The "powerful" 2017 Sena (99 JS, 96+ WA) is released today at at £498 per 6 continuing a strong run of vintages for this iconic Chilean estate.  Sena ("signature") is a collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick created to showcase the exceptional terroir of the Aconcagua Valley set between the coastal and Andes mountain ranges, north of Santiago.  A Cabernet/Carmenere blend with a dash of the other Bordeaux varietals, Sena is an intense wine, round and smooth with notes of chocolate, almonds and a spiced clove finish.

"Full-bodied, rich and powerful Seña with impressive and powerful tannins, yet harmony and balance"
99 James Suckling

In 2004 Eduardo Chadwick held a blind tasting in Berlin for 36 critics and wine writers with the aim of changing the World's perception of Chilean wines.  The results were startling:  Chadwick's wines claimed 4 of the top 6 positions with Sena 2001 rated ahead of the likes of Lafite, Latour and Margaux 2000.

"Sena is the peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings."
Neal Martin, December 2012

This Chilean icon gives its First Growth peers a serious run for their money but is still available at a fraction of the price.  Please let us know if you wish to place an order for the impressive 2017 vintage.

The aromas of blackberries, cedar, sandalwood and black tea are compelling. Black olives. Rosemary and sage undertones. Full-bodied, rich and powerful Seña with impressive and powerful tannins, yet harmony and balance. Fruit-forward. Lightly chewy. Fresh and energetic wine in a hot year. Broad-shouldered."
99pts James Suckling

This is more powerful, structured and concentrated, like a drier version of the 2015, with some grainy tannins, more acidity, more austerity and less primary fruit. The tannins have some grip (the earlier harvest perhaps?) and might need a little bit of time in bottle, and the wine seems to have what it takes to develop nicely in bottle... the varietal breakdown is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 15% Carmenère, 10% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot, reflecting a good year for Carmenère and Cabernet Franc."
