Pavie Decesse

Chateau Pavie Decesse comes from a small vineyard on the limestone slope above Chateau Pavie from very old vines and production here is miniscule, just a few hundred cases made.  97-100 from Jeb Dunnuck who describes it as "one of the great wines of the vintage".  Massive and powerful Saint Emilion.  “A headturner in the making”.  Very limited quantities.

Also from the Pavie stable, Bellevue-Mondotte is a tiny vineyard on the top of St Emilion's limestone plateau, with one of the lowest yields to be found in Bordeaux, from 50-year old vines.  Again, just a few hundred cases are made. High quality in a modern powerhouse style, but with good freshness. Limited availability.

Chateau Lagrange is now released. This shows plenty of St Julien aromatic character and is undoubtedly one of the best vintages of Lagrange yet made, rivalling the 2010 (£495) and the 2016 (£420).

In Pomerol, Clos l’Eglise (£775) is “a deep, flawlessly balanced complete Pomerol” and rising star Chateau Rouget, £420 – “plush, flamboyant and exotically beautiful”.  Both properties are neighbours of the famous Eglise Clinet.  In this acclaimed commune, both offer quality and relative value for money.

Also released:  Chasse Spleen (£294), though 2016 is a great success available at £260.

Prices

BELLEVUE MONDOTTE |   £1230 per 12x75  |  £615 per 6x75
96-98 JD - The 2018 Bellevue Mondotte is a blockbuster that just jumps out of the glass with its crème de cassis, crushed violets, blackberry, and licorice aromas and flavors. It's powerful, opulent, and massively textured, yet never over the top or too much. It has building tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish.

FIEFS DE LAGRANGE |   £210 per 12x75
92-93 JS - A subtly fruity wine with plum and currant character and hints of dried flowers. Medium body, velvety tannins and an attractive finish.

LAGRANGE |   £420 per 12x75
92-95 AG - The 2018 Lagrange is off the charts. Bold, plush and beautifully resonant in the glass, the 2018 possesses tremendous richness and textural intensity. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, espresso, mint and licorice build in a racy, sumptuous Lagrange loaded with personality. The 2018 is one of the best recent vintages I have tasted.

MONBOUSQUET |   £445 per 12x75
94-97 WS - Lushly fruited, with creamy boysenberry and plum preserve flavors gliding through, this is going to be for the hedonist crowd. Extra anise and spice notes fill in, revealing steady grip through the finish.

MONBOUSQUET BLANC |   £465 per 12x75
92-93 JS - Lovely depth of fruit to this wine. Dense and very fleshy with lots of dried-apple, pineapple and grapefruit character in this mostly sauvignon blanc and sauvignon gris.

NENIN |   £585 per 12x75
96-97 JS - This is a special wine with unique black-cherry character and hints of hazelnuts. Full bodied, tight and totally melted together with the firm and ultra-fine tannins Extremely long.

PAVIE DECESSE |   £1080 per 12x75  |  £540 per 6x75
97-100 JD - All from the upper plateau and incredible limestone soils, the 2018 Château Pavie Decesse is a crazy good wine that's going to flirt with perfection. Black raspberries, cassis, crushed stone, exotic flowers, and an incredible salinity all give way to a full-bodied, concentrated yet elegant wine that just glides over the palate. Made from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, it’s going to require 4-6 years of bottle age, but it’s one of the great wines of the vintage.
