New Release: 2015 OPUS ONE

Opus One Silhouette
“Two thousand fifteen is a classic Napa Valley vintage built on opulence, texture and voluptuousness. Interestingly, the wines also appear to have a good deal of freshness as well, especially for a warm year.”  Antonio Galloni

Opus One came from the dream of Baron de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi to marry the power and richness of Napa fruit with the elegance and classicism of Bordeaux.  We were delighted to taste the latest release, OPUS ONE 2015 last week, excited to try the new wine from this high-quality, richly-fruited Napa vintage.

2015 in Napa will be remembered for a long dry period and and high temperatures, the warmest vintage since 2008.  Following flowering, it was already clear that the crop would be considerably smaller than previous years.  Fewer berries were then naturally concentrated by perfect ripening conditions and overall yields were down 30-35% across Napa; a lower than average crop following 3 much larger years. The harvest began on 1st September making 2015 one of the earliest ever harvests at Opus, with small but high quality grapes.

81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec, aged for 18 months in new French oak.  2015 Opus One is deeply coloured, with complex aromatics of black and dark red fruit, woodsmoke, cloves and a dash of cream.  In the mouth there is wonderful depth, the fruit is opulent but bright with impressive balance.  Very seductive.  Long and seamlessly integrated with the exceptionally polished texture, tannins and freshness demonstrating the pedigree here.

2015 OPUS ONE

97+ Wine Advocate  "truly an iron fist in a velvet glove, delivering a powerhouse of flavors and structure with a seductively plush texture. It opens with a deep garnet-purple color and wonderfully spicy notes of cinnamon stick, cloves and fenugreek with a core of cherry preserves, redcurrant jelly, blackberry pie and warm plums plus hints of camphor, lavender and cigar box. Full-bodied, rich and bold in the mouth, it fills the palate with exotic spice-laced black and red fruits, framed by firm, beautifully ripe, grainy tannins and great freshness, finishing with epic persistence..."  Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW

96+ Antonio Galloni  "The 2015 Opus One is just as fabulous from bottle as it was from barrel. Dark, sumptuous and voluptuous in the glass, with no hard edges, the 2015 captures all the essence of the vintage..."

98 James Suckling  "Purity and brilliance on the nose with so much currant and flower character. Roses, currant bush and fresh leaves, too. Brightness is the word that comes to mind. Full-bodied and broad-shouldered. Juicy and so gorgeous now. Balance is so wonderful here. All about harmonious fruit and tannin balance..."

We were also privileged to be able to taste OVERTURE by Opus One. Where Opus One is the expression of a place and a single vintage, Overture is the singular expression of place. A multi-vintage blend first made in 1993, it has been sold internationally since 2014 and has garnered a following amongst wine-lovers keen to try a more accessible version of Opus One.
