Bordeaux 2017: Vintage Summary

Cos d'Estournel.jpg

20th June 2018.

As the 2017 campaign draws to a close following a couple of somewhat frenetic weeks, we wanted to summarise the releases and focus on some recommendations.  A rather mixed campaign with regards pricing - some Chateaux discounted sensibly and sold well, others not so... price has been all important this year.

Some highlights include Eglise Clinet, a strong contender for wine of the vintage and a fabulous wine which Denis Durantou thinks is better than the 2015 - 96-98+ WA "It just gets better and better as it opens in the glass.... It completes a triumvirate for Denis Durantou after the 2015 and 2016s".

Of the First Growths, Lafite sold well and we now have a little more stock to offer: 97-99 WA, Lisa Perrotti Brown calls it "stunning"; we think this looks worth securing - if you are interested in this wine, please do let us know as soon as possible.

Amongst the Second growths, worth highlighting are Leoville Barton - 93-96 AG "One of the few truly exceptional Left Bank wines of the vintage", Cos d'Estournel - 97-100 WA "profound" and Pichon Lalande "A very "Pauillac" Pichon Lalande... in the style of say, the 1996 or 2010." 93-95 NM / 94-96 WA.  We also loved Rauzan Segla and have a few cases left at present (94-96 from Lisa Perrotti Brown, WA)

Others you may have missed and of which we still have limited stocks include Beychevelle -92-95 from Antonio Galloni who says "absolutely gorgeous".  At £650/12 this is highly recommended.  We also have a couple of cases left of Canon, 93-96 AG "A rich, explosive wine, the 2017 Canon exudes class from the very first taste".

Value wines this year include Labegorce "an estate readers need to have on their radar" 91-93 pts Jeb Dunnock. As always, the wines from Denis Durantou offer great value - Cruzelles, La Chenade, Saintayme and Montlandrie.

Do let us know if you wish to place an order, are looking for any particular wines or would like further recommendations.
