Bordeaux 2017: Gruaud Larose, Clarte de Haut Brion, Quintus...

Gruaud Larose

4th June 2018.

After a break for the Vinexpo trade fair in Hong Kong last week, En Primeur resumes this morning with St Julien Chateau Gruaud Larose now released at £615 per case.  Interest in this traditional favourite has been rising lately, however, the excellent 2016 Gruaud Larose can be found at around the same price.

From Chateau Haut Brion we can offer Clarte de Haut Brion at £710 per case.  This is the second wine of both Haut Brion Blanc and La Mission Haut Brion Blanc (formerly Laville Haut Brion).  An impressive white wine in its own right displaying juicy white peach character, nice weight, and crisp elegance on the finish.

St Julien

£615 per 12 btl  /  £307.50 per 6
92-93 James Suckling  "A firm and silky young red with an attractive center palate of fruit and hints of cedar. Fresh, tight and compacted."
90-92 Neal Martin  " The palate is medium-bodied with finely balanced. An unpretentious but pretty Gruaud Larose that is benefitted by what is clearly a prudent extraction. The oak is neatly integrated with a linear, almost pastille-like finish and quite a sustained aftertaste."

Graves

£710 per 12 btl  / £355 per 6
93 Decanter  "This is an exceptionally good Clarté, a second wine to buy this year if you possibly can, underlining just what exceptional whites have been produced at the Haut-Brion stable in 2017. It has lovely aromatics, with persistent flavours of exotic stone fruit, white flowers, soft rosemary and slatey minerality. It's generous without losing focus."
90-92 Wine Advocate  "opens with very sprightly peaches and fresh lemon juice notes with nuances of honeysuckle and chalk dust. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant citrus and stone fruit flavors, finishing long and chalky."
  £1060 per 12 btl  /  £530 per 6
93-95 Wine Advocate  "The palate is medium to full-bodied with great intensity and energy, displaying vibrant red and black fruits with wonderful acidity and ripe, rounded tannins, finishing long and lively."
89-91 Neal Martin  "medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a tight ball of slightly ferrous dark berry fruit mixed with brown spice, although the finish feels easy-going and does not deliver the complexity of a top-drawer vintage."
