2005 Gran Reserva 890 'Seleccion Especial'

We are delighted to offer the new release of La Rioja Alta's flagship wine, the 2005 Gran Reserva 890 "Seleccion Especial".
 
The 890 cuvee is the estate's top offering, made from the best grapes from the finest plots and only produced in exceptional vintages. Considered this auspicious Rioja estate's flagship wine, only three vintages on average are released every decade and the 2005 has been much anticipated, a superb vintage which is already predicted to rival 1964, its official vintage classification is "excelente" so they have chosen to label it "Seleccion Especial" for only the third time in their history as they are convinced it is one of their greatest ever wines.
 
A blend of 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo, this wine was matured for six years in barrel before being bottled in 2012 then aged in the estate's cellars since and released now that they consider it at the start of its drinking window.

We were hugely impressed when we tasted it in the office - an intoxicatingly beautiful nose of wild strawberries; wonderfully silky smooth in the palate, lots of berries & cherries, vanilla and spice. Lovely acidity & structure, wonderfully creamy and lush, very well integrated. In short, highly recommended!   The 2005 Gran Reserva 904 was a huge success when offered last year and sold out quickly; we expect this 890 to be highly sought after.
