Bordeaux 2016: Carbonnieux, Grand Mayne, Ferriere...
Neal Martin's vintage report heaped praise on the 2016s and highlighted a few Chateaux that had particularly excelled. Included amongst a host of more illustrious names was the excellent Chateau CARBONNIEUX from Pessac-Leognan, released today at £295 per 12. We can also offer the estate's "terrific" white wine at £260 per 12.

GRAND MAYNE is released at £360 per 12 with 94-96 from Neal Martin: "very elegant and refined... one of the best I have tasted". You will be hard pressed to find a cheaper wine with a higher score than this impressive St Emilion.
ECHO DE LYNCH BAGES is released at £340 per 12, 93-94 Suckling and 89-92 Galloni; "Sumptuous and resonant on the palate, the 2016 will drink nicely right out of the gate". LYNCH BAGES is also released but is currently sold out to clients who ordered last year. We are trying to secure extra cases, please let us know if you are interested.
Finally we have an "excellent" Chateau FERRIERE from Margaux at £360 per 12 (92-94 Neal Martin) and Chateau GAZIN (94-96) from the famous Pomerol plateau at a very ambitious £725 per 12. We can offer Gazin 2015 at £600 per 12 with the same score and the Gazin 2014, "a great Pomerol", at £520.
Chateau CARBONNIEUX ROUGE - £295 per 12 in bond
92-94 Neal Martin "The 2016 Carbonnieux has a gorgeous, beautifully defined bouquet with pure black fruit, hints of sous-bois and pressed flowers, the new oak seamlessly integrated. What a nuanced and sensual bouquet! The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of ripe, black, graphite-tinged fruit, supremely well-judged acidity and a level of harmony that frankly, I have never encountered on a Carbonnieux. This is a brilliant wine from this Pessac-Léognan estate that has threatened to make a wine this good in the past."
Chateau CARBONNIEUX BLANC - £260 per 12 in bond
89-92 Antonio Galloni "Scents of slate, pear, green apple, mint and herbs give the 2016 Carbonnieux Blanc much of its distinctive personality. Bright and nuanced, with good depth, the 2016 hits all the right notes. This is terrific."
Chateau GRAND MAYNE- £360 per 12 in bond
94-96 Neal Martin "This is very elegant and refined, displaying more terroir characteristics with a gorgeous herbal lift, almost as if owner Jean-Antoine Nony had used some stems! The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, almost Pomerol-like in style with more mineralité and refinement on the finish. This is a new style of Grand-Mayne, and frankly, it is one of the best I have tasted from this Saint Emilion estate."

Chateau FERRIERE - £360 per 12 in bond
92-94 Neal Martin "The 2016 Ferriere is an accomplished Margaux for the vintage. It has a feminine, refined bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry and light rose petal aromas, just a hint of vanilla from the new oak that is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, quite juicy tannin. This is very harmonious with fine tannin, impressive depth and a sense of mineralité that is in tune with this vintage. I thought that the 2015 Ferriere was excellent, but this is another step up. Bravo, Clare Villars Lurton!"

There is abundant, lightly spiced black fruit with a touch of cracked black pepper and clove towards the finish. The 50% new oak will add a little muscle onto the finish, thereupon you will have a really marvelous Gazin that will give three years of drinking pleasure, possibly more."
