Bordeaux 2016: Angelus (99-100 JS), Pavie (98-100 NM, 99-100 JS...

Two significant Right Bank releases this morning:  Chateaux ANGELUS and PAVIE.  Both were elevated to Saint Emilion First Growth status in 2012, and both receive potentially perfect scores in 2016.

The prestigious Chateau PAVIE is superbly situated, and following a change in style  here, 2016 is the best young Pavie we've ever tasted. The critics are unanimous in their praise with potentially perfect scores from Neal Martin (98-100), James Suckling (99-100), Antonio Galloni (97-100) and the Wine Spectator (97-100).  Whilst the price has increased there can be no denying that this an exceptionally fine Pavie.

Chateau ANGELUS is popular the world over (and is the claret of choice for James Bond).  One of Bordeaux's strongest brands with back vintages always hard to find.  The 2016 is another seriously impressive St Emilion with a possible perfect score from James Suckling (99-100).

We can also offer the second wines of both, CARILLON D'ANGELUS and AROMES DE PAVIE at £875 per 12.  Finally we have the release of Chateau QUINTUS at £1120, the St Emilon from the team at Haut Brion.

ANGELUS - £3,580 per 12 in bond
99-100 James Suckling "Incredible depth of fruit to this Angélus, which is dense yet also agile and energetic. There's just so much dynamic fruit and tannin structure. Makes you want to taste and taste. What a young wine! We will see if 2016 is better than 2015. Both are great."

CARILLON D'ANGELUS - £875 per 12 in bond
90-92 Neal Martin "It has a perfumed, marine-tinged bouquet, the lifted cassis fruit tinged with seaweed. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannin, very well-judged acidity and very harmonious... it does have class and would probably show up many other Saint Emilion grand crus."

PAVIE - £3,580 per 12 in bond
98-100 Neal Martin "As Gérard Perse explained, this is a Pavie that has taken stock and shifted in direction in recent years, reflecting more of its exceptional terroir instead of winemaking. It has a very intense bouquet that is extremely well-defined and shrugs off that higher alcohol level. You can find the graphite vein courtesy of the Cabernet Sauvignon and the underlying tension, while a second bottle had a soupçon more florality. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe, supple tannins that gently caress the mouth. It feels beguiling and charming, totally different in style compared to say Cheval Blanc, offering a more sensual take on the 2016 growing season. It is a very impressive follow-up to the 2015 Pavie and may surpass it once in bottle."

AROMES DE PAVIE - £875 per 12 in bond
87-89 Neal Martin " It has a powerful and voluminous bouquet with sweet ripe black cherries, blueberry and a dash of black pepper. The palate is full-bodied with a firm grip in the mouth, a powerful and demonstrative Arômes de Pavie"

QUINTUS - £1,120 per 12 in bond
94 Decanter "The sixth vintage under the wing of Haut-Brion. The vines didn't block in the heat here, which is why the alcohols are generous, but this is absolutely perfectly balanced. The generosity of the ripe blackberry and cassis fruit stretches out with the juice running right through it, joined by some exotic spice and grilled oak touches through the mid-palate. But they never overwhelm the gentle extraction, and overall this is an extremely successful Quintus that leaves a beautifully fragrant quality in the mouth. 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc."
