Bordeaux 2016: Cos D'Estournel

Cos d'Estournel.jpg

This morning sees the first big name release of the vintage, Cos d'Estournel.  Saint Estephe is one of the highlights in 2016 and this year's Cos is a supremely elegant wine, certainly superior to its 2015 counterpart. Released at the same euro price as the 2015, this is a positive start to the campaign.

Chateau COS D'ESTOURNEL - £1400 per 12.
97 Decanter "This is one of the best Cos d'Estournels that I can remember trying at this early stage, it really does have every hair standing up on end. Powerful and deep, with a clear intensity but such delicacy; this is fresh, beautiful and succulent."
97-98
James Suckling "The finish is something else here. This is a wine that's so powerful and tannic yet at the same time so polished and superb on the finish. Full-bodied, beautifully crafted and precise. This is a wine that really grabs your attention. The agility and power are more than impressive. Wow is the word."

PAGODES DE COS - £385 per 12.
An impressive second wine, you can taste the quality here and an excellent introduction to the Cos style.  The Chateau have made an effort to come down a little with the price this year which makes the price seem fair.
93-94 James Suckling "The brightness and focus to this second wine of Cos are certainly impressive. You can see the quality. Full body, a tight and focused palate and beautiful fruit and density. Ultra-fine tannins. Gorgeous. Sophisticated."

COS D'ESTOURNEL BLANC - £985 per 12.
A mouthwatering complex white from Cos, a worthy rival to the established names of Graves.
96-97 James Suckling "A layered and deep white with beautiful fruit giving mango, sliced-lemon and green-pineapple character. Full-bodied and so flavorful. Love the phenolic balance. One of the best dry whites of the vintage."
