Marchesi Antinori - famous for 'Super Tuscan' superstars Tignanello and Guado al Tasso - also owns a wine estate in Puglia in the far south of Italy called Tormaresca.  The principle aim of this estate is to make the best examples of the Aglianico grape, indigenous to Southern Italy and known as the "Barolo of the South", thanks to its similarities with the Nebbiolo grape: namely bold tannins, ageability and complexity.

“I need to make a special callout to Vito Palumbo, manager of Marchesi Antinori's Puglia estate Tormaresca and "Mr. Puglia" in person. Few have championed the Puglia wine identity more articulately and more passionately than Vito Palumbo. Tuscany's Antinori family invested in Puglia in 1999. This ground-breaking winery subsequently brought a wave of new investments and hot-climate winemaking technology to the boot of Italy"

We had a highly enjoyable tasting of these wines last week and loved the 2013 Trentangeli (100% organic), which we think offers great value for money at £15.50 per bottle including taxes (93pts Suckling). This will be in our cellars and ready to deliver at the beginning of September.

This shows lots of ripe fruit with blueberry character that is highlighted with spices such as cloves. Full body with soft, silky tannins and a coffee, licorice and berry aftertaste. Made from organic grapes. Mostly aglianico with some cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold."
