Bordeaux 2015: Eglise Clinet & Petite Eglise
The release of Eglise Clinet is always one of the most keenly anticipated of any en primeur campaign and 2015 is no exception. Once again it is a contender for wine of the vintage and is released at a good discount to the 2010 (WA 96+, £2700) and 2009 (WA 99+, £2900). We can also offer the excellent value second label Petite Eglise, a perennial favourite with our clients.
EGLISE CLINET - £1900 per 12. Situated on the famed plateau of Pomerol, it is one of the greatest wines of the appellation for its decadence and concentration. With very old vines of 75 years +, production levels are tiny with around 1000 cs made. Rarely available on the market once mature, Eglise Clinet is certainly one of the small band of wines that is always worth securing en primeur.
96-98 Neal Martin "Denis Durantou poured two samples for me. First from Darnajou barrel. Here, a very composed, effortless bouquet with extremely pure raspberry coulis, strawberry, almost confit-like scents that display ethereal delineation. This is not a powerful or intense bouquet, rather one that is sophisticated and refined, bunches of violet emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, crisp acidity, mineral-rich and tensile. There is tangible energy and refinement on the finish that lingers long and tenderly in the mouth, a wine constantly having something more to say. The second came from Demptos barrel. This was deeper on the nose, showing a touch more fruit, slightly higher toned. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, structured in the mouth, perhaps the barrel impressing its character more on the wine than the Darnajou. Together, they should combine to create a quite magical 2015 L'Eglise-Clinet."
98-99 James Suckling "Lively and energized. Full body, intense and dense tannins. Great wine. Goes on for minutes. Such focus and clarity."
PETITE EGLISE - £290 per 12 - The second label of Eglise Clinet is made from 100% Merlot and is a gorgeous Pomerol in its own right.
90-92 Neal Martin "It has a vivacious, precocious bouquet for a deuxième vin, kirsch and raspberry coulis, a touch of orange blossom. It is not an exotic bouquet, but it knows how to have fun."
90-93 Antonio Galloni "A gorgeous second wine, the 2015 La Petite Eglise exudes raciness. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, hard candy, blood orange, rose petal and mint give the Petite Eglise an exotic edge that is compelling. There is a level of Pinot-like sweetness and overall purity here that is impossible to miss. This sensual 100% Merlot will give readers immense pleasure over the next decade or so."
