Chapoutier Bila-Haut Selections Parcellaires

While we wait for the great Chateaux of Bordeaux to reveal primeur prices, we are pleased to offer some of the best value offerings from Southern France:  the 2014 releases from Michel Chapoutier's supremely successful Domaine de Bila-Haut.
 
Chapoutier's single vineyard releases represent the pinnacle of the Domaine's offerings and are some of the finest wines from the Roussillon.
  • Latour de France Visitare Interiore Terrae (V.I.T.) is old vine Grenache and Syrah from the garrigue scrubland
  • Lesquerde Rectificando Invenies (R.I.) is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan from a hilltop vineyard on granite and limestone soils
The Domaine is situated in the far south not far from Perpignan, where 2014 was a cooler summer with a late warm and sunny harvest.  There is good ripeness as you might expect but the altitude of these vineyards helps to give a pleasing freshness and surprising elegance that is not often found at this price level.  Made with expertise in very small quantities (circa 200 cases) it is clear that they offer excellent value for money, especially given their exceptional reviews (94-96 Wine Advocate).

"Still in tank, the 2014 Cotes de Roussillon Latour de France Visitare Interiore Terrae ( V I T ) is a 60/40 split of Grenache and Syrah the spent 18 months in 60% demi-muids and 40% in concrete tanks. It offers a full-bodied, supple, sexy style (which is not the norm in the vintage) to go with lots of ripe currant fruit, licorice, black raspberries and dried herbs. It will drink nicely right out of the gate, yet also evolve nicely."

"Made from 100% Syrah, the 2014 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde Rectificando Invenies (Ri) comes from yields of less than one ton per acre and was raised all in demi-muids. Hitting 13.9% natural alcohol, this inky colored beauty gives up lots of dark fruits, graphite, scrub brush and dried violet characteristics to go with a full-bodied, elegant, yet textured and even sexy style on the palate. There's plenty of fine tannin hiding in here, but it's enjoyable already and should hit the ground running. It will have 10-15 years of overall longevity."
