2012 Vin de Constance

Vin de Constance bottle & case.jpg
One of the World's great sweet wines, Vin de Constance has an incredible history and an exciting future.  The relentless work by the team at Klein Constantia to recreate the original vineyard conditions at the estate and produce the perfectly raisined berries required is really paying off.  Matt Day, the talented young winemaker at Klein Constantia, has released an impressive string of recent vintages and 2012 may just surpass them all!

"Sweeter and more alcoholic than the 2011, but somehow fresher and brighter, too, it's floral, pure and focused, with notes of orange zest, tarte tatin and well integrated oak. Shaping up to be the best Vin de Constance yet."
97pts Tim Atkin, South Africa Report 2015
Overall Sweet Wine of the Year

First made in 1685 from raisined Muscat de Frontignon berries, Klein Constantia's Vin de Constance was known historically simply as "Constantia" and drunk in preference to Tokay and Yquem. Drunk by Napoleon, Frederick the Great, Bismarck, and referenced by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Baudelaire to name a few, this is a legendary wine.  A bottle of 1791 was recently opened at the estate and still amazed with its incredible aromatics and purity of flavours

Recent vintages of Vin de Constance have received much critical acclaim and are becoming increasingly hard to find as its popularity worldwide increases.
  • The 2007 received 97pts from the Wine Advocate and was described as "a startling, world-class wine that gives Yquem a run for its money"
  • A wine fit for royalty, the 2008 Vin de Constance was served at the recent state banquet when the Queen hosted Chinese president Xi Jinping and his wife at Buckingham Palace
  • The 2009 was crowned number 4 in the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2015
At its recent launch the 2012 proved itself a worthy successor with its wonderfully pure aromatics; fresh apricot, stoned fruit, orange zest and floral notes. The palate shows crisp mandarin, pineapple and hints of honeycomb all leading through to a long precise finish. This is a beautifully balanced and refreshingly racy sweet wine.  A fraction of the price of Yquem, at just over £40 per bottle (inc duty and VAT), this is a legendary wine that doesn't come with an enormous price tag.

"if I happen to taste better value for money than recent vintages I will let you know - but don't hang around waiting. I mean, under $50 for a meticulously crafted, profound, rare and utterly delicious world class wine? What are you waiting for?"
Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
