The Greatest Wines in Chile's History

Sena 2013 bottle
While Bordeaux is still the benchmark it now faces stiff competition from some increasingly impressive New World Bordeaux blends.  In 2004 Eduardo Chadwick held a blind tasting in Berlin with the aim of changing the World's perception of Chilean wines.  Chadwick's wines claimed 4 of the top 6 positions with Sena 2001 rated ahead of the likes of Lafite, Latour and Margaux 2000.

In 2013 the later-ripening Bordeaux varieties have done particularly well in the cooler weather conditions in Chile making for elegant structured wines of considerable finesse.

  • SENA 2013 is the highest ever rated Chilean wine with 99 points from James Suckling "Tannins are perfectly polished. It builds on the palate and shows the structure of a first growth Bordeaux".

Both of these Chilean icons are offering their First Growth peers a serious run for their money but are still available at a fraction of the price.

"Superb aromas of black currants, rose petal and mint. Lavender and stones too. Full body with incredible fruit density. Complex, yet it's agile and bright. Tannins are perfectly polished. It builds on the palate and shows the structure of a first growth Bordeaux but remains so Chilean. A blend of 58% cabernet sauvignon, 15% carmenere, 12% malbec, 10% merlot, and 5% petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. This is a joy to taste now but it will show itself in 2019. Even better than the amazing 2012."

"Sena is the peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings."

Another great Almaviva. Reminiscent of the great 2010. A blend of 72% cabernet sauvignon, 19% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc, 2% petit verdot and 1% merlot."
