The Greatest Wines in Chile's History
While Bordeaux is still the benchmark it now faces stiff competition from some increasingly impressive New World Bordeaux blends. In 2004 Eduardo Chadwick held a blind tasting in Berlin with the aim of changing the World's perception of Chilean wines. Chadwick's wines claimed 4 of the top 6 positions with Sena 2001 rated ahead of the likes of Lafite, Latour and Margaux 2000.
In 2013 the later-ripening Bordeaux varieties have done particularly well in the cooler weather conditions in Chile making for elegant structured wines of considerable finesse.
- SENA 2013 is the highest ever rated Chilean wine with 99 points from James Suckling "Tannins are perfectly polished. It builds on the palate and shows the structure of a first growth Bordeaux".
Perhaps Chile's most renowned wine is ALMAVIVA, the collaboration between Concha Y Toro and the makers of Mouton Rothschild. Over the last 2 decades they have combined their knowledge and consistently produced some prodigious wines in a Pauillac style. With 97 points from James Suckling the 2013 vintage of Almaviva promises to be the best ever.
Both of these Chilean icons are offering their First Growth peers a serious run for their money but are still available at a fraction of the price.

"Sena is the peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings."

"Superb aromas of Indian spices, blackberry, blueberry and dried flowers. Full body, soft and polished tannins and an amazing finesse of subtle yet intense flavors. This is so pure and fruity. Another great Almaviva. Reminiscent of the great 2010. A blend of 72% cabernet sauvignon, 19% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc, 2% petit verdot and 1% merlot."
