Solaia 2011

Solaia label

We are pleased to offer the new vintage of Solaia, just rated 96pts by James Suckling, one of the original Super-Tuscans and an Italian First Growth in quality.

Made from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 20% Sangiovese from well-exposed hillside plots, Solaia (aka the "the sunny one") is a gorgeous wine, aromatic and elegant, probably one of the most refined Super-Tuscans in style.

2011 is another great vintage in Tuscany but with a small yield due to the hotter weather: "As readers know by now, 2011 was a drought year with warmer than average temperatures... Temperatures remained warmer than normal throughout the year until the very end of the summer, when heat moderated a bit.  In some places, growers reported losses of 30-35% mostly through dehydration.  Overall, the 2011s are forward, fruit-driven wines in the style of years like 2007, with perhaps a bit less exuberance."

With the style and warmth of the vintage producing gorgeous wines, 2011 looks poised to be recognised as a stellar year.  Solaia is on a roll and with less to go around, it makes sense to jump in quickly.  Please let us know asap if you would like to order.

96pts James Suckling "A big, rich wine but there's lots of brightness and beauty at the same time. Shows licorice and asphalt. Full body with chewy tannins and a long finish. Terracotta, Tuscan dust and spice; balsamic too. This needs three to five years to soften. Intense finish."
