Petite Eglise

29 April 2014

Some of the best values of all Bordeaux are now available from Denis Durantou, the talented winemaker of Pomerol's famous Eglise Clinet (not yet released but undoubtedly one of the wines of the vintage). Petite Eglise is a serious wine with a small price tag.  It is only available in cases of 3 magnums this year due to the limited quantity available (only 600 cases).  Denis' other releases often sell out very quickly - Les Cruzelles has some seriously good reviews this year that place it much higher than its modest price level (£140/cs) suggests.  At £98/cs La Chenade is an incredible value.  We can whole heartedly recommend the wines of Denis in the 2013 vintage - these are without doubt the best value wines this year.

"Good chance that Les Cruzelles from Denis Durantou will be the bargain of the 2013 vintage. As it was in 2012." Tim Atkin MW, tweeted April 3rd

A leading Second Growth and one of the most impressive wines of the vintage, Leoville Las Cases is released 10% cheaper than any available vintage at £860 per case - sensibly released at the same price as the 2008.  Clos du Marquis, a Grand Vin in its own right, is released at £300 per case.

Pape Clement is released at £540 per case, 10% cheaper than any available vintage and the impressive Pape Clement Blanc is released at £970 per case.

Releases

PETITE EGLISE - 2nd wine of Eglise Clinet - £120 per case/3 Magnums.  RECOMMENDED
"As usual, there is more complexity here than almost every other Pomerol cru, with a lovely touch of spice towards the finish. This is very fine." 88-90 Neal Martin

LA CHENADE - £98 per case/12 IB or £49 per case/6 IBRECOMMENDED
"It has a pure bouquet, very floral with very pure wild strawberry and red cherries that are already very generous. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. There is fine tension here, not a powerful Lalande de Pomerol but natural and refined." Neal Martin 89-91

LES CRUZELLES - £140 per case/12 IB or £70 per case/6 IBRECOMMENDED
"The nose is so pure, it almost reminds me of a top quality New World Pinot Noir. Blueberry and cassis to the fore! The palate is medium-bodied with firmer and more present tannins than the La Chenade, rendering this more masculine and probably with more longevity. It exerts a gentle grip towards the saline finish that feels natural and refined. Very fine." 90-92 Neal Martin

MONTLANDRIE - £130 per case/12 IB or £65 per case/6 IB.
"Here we are in red fruit territory on the nose, with crushed strawberry and redcurrant scents interlaced beautifully with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet ripe tannins." 88-90 Neal Martin

SAINTAYME - £95 per case/12 IB or £50 per case/6 IB.
"100% Merlot. Black cherry and sweet spices. Very ripe and easygoing. Good, user-friendly St-Émilion." 16/20 Richeard Hemming, JancisRobinson.com

LEOVILLE LAS CASES - £860 per case/12 IB or £430 per case/6 IB.
"It has a very classic Léoville Las-Cases bouquet with tobacco-scented black fruit that opens nicely during the time I spend chatting to Jean-Hubert Delon. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity, again, a much more fresh and classic take on Las-Cases reminiscent of 1980s vintages such as the 1983 or 1988. Just add "gentleman's club"."  92-94 Neal Martin

CLOS DU MARQUIS - £300 per case/12 IB or £150 per case/6 IB.
"Solid, with a core of plum and raspberry fruit still working to meld with the coating of roasted apple wood. The juicy finish picks up a dark currant hint and a flicker of bramble. Should fill out more during the élevage" James Molesworth 87-90

PAPE CLEMENT - £540 per case/12 IB or £270 per case/6 IB.
"this has a fragrant floral bouquet that has fine definition and vigour for the vintage, the oak a little obvious at the moment but that will integrate. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition. This is quite elegant in the mouth with a decent fresh quite classic finish (13% alcohol). This Pape-Clement is very fine for the vintage - one of the best in the appellation although there are better vintages out there." 91-93 Neal Martin

PAPE CLEMENT BLANC - £970 per case/12 IB or £485 per case/6 IB.
"Dense and structured white with a deep, enticing fruit character but agile and lively on the palate. Layered and refined. Lots of pear, slice-apple, mineral and lemon character. Clearly outstanding." James Suckling 95-96

All wines are available in cases of 6 (pro rata) and halves, magnums and larger formats.
