Tasting Notes

The 2014 Montlandrie, the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux from Denis Durantou, is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon (yes, different to the percentages stated during primeur happy to correct it now!). It offers attractive red cherry, wild strawberry and pastille-like scents on the pure bouquet, though maybe I discern a little more complexity on Denis' two Lalande-de-Pomerols, La Chenade and Les Cruzelles. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This feels a little compact at the moment (possibly because of the low pressure system on the day that I tasted?), although there is still commendable depth of fruit and a gentle grip on the persistent finish. I would just give this a couple more years in bottle.

The Château Montlandrie 2014, Denis Durantou’s Côtes de Castillon vineyard, is a blend of 90% Merlot picked September 24-29 and 10% Cabernet Franc picked October 23-24. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a generous bouquet that takes its time to get going in the glass, eventually revealing blackberry and briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with just the right amount of fleshiness here to balance the chalky tannins; mulberry and white pepper vivifying the finish. This is a subtle Montlandrie, one imbued with Durantous’s art.

Cool and pure on the nose with direct, inky fruit. Intense with fresh blueberries, good weight leading to a creamy, even finish.

A powerful, explosive wine, the 2014 Montlandrie boasts notable depth and intensity. Sweet black cherries, mocha, smoke, tobacco, licorice, menthol and tar burst onto the palate. There is plenty of density in the glass, but the silky tannins help balance some of the slightly rustic elements that come through from time to time. The blend is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Features a lively mix of bramble, cassis bush and savory notes weaving around a core of blueberry and plum fruit. The bramble accent gives the finish solid grip.
