Tasting Notes

The 2014 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, you could argue, has a more engaging bouquet vis-à-vis the La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, a scintilla more mineralité and tension demonstrated in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, vibrant wild strawberry and blackcurrant fruit intermingling with white pepper, bay leaf and cedar. There is admirable persistence in the mouth suggesting that it will offer 12-15 years drinking pleasure. This is very fine.

Score: 91 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2019-2032 Date: 31 March 2017

The Le Clarence de Haut Brion 2014 is a blend of 80% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. (There was a lot of Merlot due to a lot of deselection from the Grand Vin.) It has an immediately engaging bouquet, perhaps better definition than the Chapelle de la Mission, a little more mineralité coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, cohesive, tighter and more linear than the La Chapelle with longer persistence on the finish. Excellent.

Love the sweet-tobacco and floral aromas to this with currant fruit as well. Full-bodied, solid and tight. Chewy tannins. A racy second wine of Haut-Brion with lots of tone and tension. Try in 2024.

Score: 95 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com Date: 13 February 2017

Gorgeous second wine for Haut-Brion with firm and savory tannins. Full, refined and layered with meat, tobacco, dark fruit and earth. Serious.

Score: 93 - 94 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com Date: 27 March 2015

Pure lifted aromas of blackberry and mint. Quite disjointed at this stage, with the component parts of Merlot and the Cabernet seemingly quite distinct. Nicely textured with a spicy oak finish.

Score: 90 - 93 Albany Vintners, - Date: 24 April 2015

Deep crimson. Rather silky and opulent. Polished fruit and some real depth. But pretty strict in terms of dryness. An edge of firmness and quite marked acidity. Only medium bodied. But some nobility in terms of oak quality and tannin management.

Score: 16 - 17 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2021-2030 Date: 21 April 2015

A huge, voluptuous wine, the 2014 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion wraps around the palate with serious depth and power. The Merlot is especially opulent and concentrated. Super-ripe dark red cherry, plum, spice and leather flesh out in a wine that captures all of the richness of the dry Indian summer. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2014 Clarence is going to need time to fully come together. The blend is 80% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc.

Score: 91 - 94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com Date: 01 April 2015

Plump, fleshy and inviting in feel, with a strong plum pâte de fruit note leading the way, backed by anise, blueberry and tar flavors. Picks up lots of briary grip on the finish. Still youthfully raw, but exhibits good energy and stuffing. Tasted non-blind
