Tasting Notes

The 2013 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild, a blend of 20% Merlot and 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, has a simple bouquet for Duhart, though one that is not unpleasurable with muted scents of red plum and boysenberry fruit. Perhaps what the challenging growing season did was denude this Pauillac of terroir expression since I found little of that trademark pencil lead aroma. The palate is medium-bodied and quite rounded in the mouth, slightly lower in acidity than I was expecting, but cohesive with black fruit tinged with cedar and leather. It is a forward Duhart-Milon with moderate depth but decent length. It might be the earliest drinking and most approachable Duhart that I have encountered, but it still has drinking pleasure to offer.

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, the Duhart Milon was picked from 1 October until 14 October. It has a typical Duhart with that Havana cigar wafting from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with strict and linear tannins matched by well-judged acidity. This is a straight down the line classic, less demonstrative Duhart with a lovely tobacco infused finish. Drink over the next 15 years.

The 2013 Duhart-Milon impresses for its energy, cut and focus. Freshly cut flowers, smoke, graphite, melted road tar and smoke all take shape in the glass. The 2013 is smoky, gamy and rich, with good depth and intensity for the vintage, all supported by firm, incisive tannins. The harvest took place from October 1 to 14. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot.

Deep colour, fine cassis nose, palate reserved at first and then opens with ripeness and length, a combination of firmness and charm.

80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. Glossy cabernet fruit, and a tell-tale hint of greenness. Fine but grippy tannins on the finish. Slightly medicinal on the finish. Has an attractive structure, though not huge concentration. (16.5)

A beautiful wine with plum, berry and Spanish cedar. Some chocolate, too. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Fine tannin texture.

Offers a sappy core of kirsch and blackberry fruit, harnessed by a sanguine edge that holds the finish. A light cedary note provides the backdrop. A touch austere in the end. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Tasted non-blind.

Score: 88 - 91 James Molesworth, Wine Spectator Date: 01 April 2014

More serious than Carruades. Measured and elegant with cedar and cherry and a very appealing satiny texture. Glossy with plenty of juice in the middle and energy on the finish.
