Tasting Notes

The 2013 Brane-Cantenac has come on nicely since I last tasted it in barrel, even if it does fall short of recent vintages from Henri Lurton and his team. Certainly it has developed more fruit concentration on the nose: fresh strawberries and redcurrant laced with tobacco. The palate is nicely balanced with fine tannin and well-judged acidity, just a touch of piquancy coming through on the finish. It has developed more heft during barrel ageing and given 3 or 4 years in bottle, should develop into a satisfying mid-term Margaux.

The Grand Vin is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc (more Cabernet Sauvignon because the Cabernet Franc did not quite pass muster.) It has a clean cedar scented bouquet that is very linear and somehow quite airy. The palate is medium-bodied and nicely balanced. On this occasion, this oak is quite prominent on the day I tasted although Henri Lurton remarked that it varies day to day. This is a nicely made, easy-drinking style of Brane-Cantenac to enjoy over the next 10 years.

Plenty of toasted oak apparent here. Crunchy fruit, medium body, good balance of tannin and acid. Better body than many other 2013s, though still light compared with a typical Bordeaux year. (16.5)

A lifted nose with bright red cherry fruit. Lots of interest and flavour here with high-toned fruit and energy and a mocha finish.

Good young colour, Margaux fragrance on the nose, florality, elegance and balance in the discreet Brane style.

Light, with airy plum and red cherry notes giving way to a light sanguine note through the finish.

The 2013 Brane-Cantenac is a wine of rare distinction. Tobacco, smoke, cedar, red plums and menthol all meld together in a striking, beautifully nuanced wine endowed with considerable personality and tons of style. The 2013 is soft and understated, but is also impeccable in its balance.

Loads of strawberry and berry character with a fantastic intensity. Medium body, with a beautiful core of fruit and a long finish. Rose petals and fruit. Wonderful finesse. A triumph for the vintage.
