Tasting Notes:

The Phelan-Segur has an attractive bouquet with crisp blackberry and floral aromas, pretty in a similar way to Lilian Ladouys. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp chalky tannins. The oak is well integrated with fine acidity, the finish foursquare but long. Classic Phelan Segur. Tasted April 2012.

A sleeper of the vintage, this is a beautiful follow-up, in a much more challenging vintage, to their exceptional 2009. Deep plum/purple-hued with a nose of mulberries, black currants and cassis, the wine is dense, medium-bodied, ripe for a 2011, with good underlying acidity and a seriously endowed, layered texture. The tannins are present, but well-integrated and ripe. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

Well-extracted, slightly spicy-gamey black fruits and very good smooth ripe tannins. It shows elegance, depth and class.

Ripe, dark and savoury. Lots of oak char on the palate. Dense, firm but there's fruit under there somewhere, just well hidden. Chewy finish with some finishing sweetness. (JH)
