Tasting Notes

The 2017 Boyd Cantenac has a light blackberry and briary bouquet that develops nicely in the glass, revealing subtle tarry notes with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. Despite giving the sample ample aeration, it remains somewhat pinched and with drying wood tannins towards the finish. It feels as if it needs more fruit concentration vis-à-vis the oak. Hopefully this will improve by the time of bottling.

The 2017 Boyd-Cantenac is deep garnet-purple colored with a nose of crushed blackcurrants, warm plums and fragrant earth with a waft of mossy bark. The palate is medium-bodied with a chewy backbone and oodles of freshness, finishing earthy.

Chewy and tight red with dark-berry and blueberry character. Hints of walnuts. Medium body and a fresh finish.

As with Pouget, there was 50% loss to frost here, but it has been better handled in this case. Juice ripples among the cassis and black cherry fruit, well expressed and with some poise. It is not enormously intense and fades just a touch, but it should develop well and is hugely promising as a pleasurable medium term drinker. Give it seven to eight years before this is ready to go.
