[Add to shopping basket] Gazin Pomerol £397 6x75cl - 95-96 92-94 94 - 92-94
Hide the tasting notes

A very juicy and nicely chewy young red with black berry, chocolate and cedar aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with integrated tannins and a fresh and persistent finish.

Score: 95 - 96 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, licorice, cherries and spices, the 2022 Gazin is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with excellent depth at the core, sweet tannins and a long, expansive finish. Despite the drought, the vineyards performed better in 2022 than in 2020 at this address, and the result is one of the better vintages for Gazin in recent years.

Score: 92 - 94 William Kelley, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com

A serious Pomerol even in the lightest of vintages, so it really can relax into its natural character in 2022. Strict tannins, but that is often the case for this wine, relaxing into liqourice, cocoa bean, espresso, rosemary, underbrush, slightly drying on the finish, but this has a ton of impact, it has all the elements for ageing, an impressive wine.

Score: 94 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Lots of spiced black cherries, currants, chocolate, and spicy notes emerge from the 2022 Château Gazin, a richer, medium to full-bodied Pomerol with plenty of mid-palate depth, building tannins, and outstanding length. The tannins will need to be watched here, but this is clearly an outstanding wine in the making.

Hide the tasting notes

The 2022 Guillot-Clauzel is a potent, heady wine that expresses all of the solar intensity of the year in its size. A reduction in new oak pushes the fruit forward. Blue/purplish fruit, licorice, lavender, grilled herbs and spices all open in the glass, framed by the slightly larger-grained tannins that are one of the signatures of this site. This powerful, dense Pomerol has a good bit of potential.

Score: 92 - 94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com Maturity: 2030-2052

The best wine that Guillaume Thinepont has produced to date at this small estate is the 2022 Guillot Clauzel, an attractive blend of 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc that exhibits aromas of blackberries, violets, iris and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and polished, with supple tannins and a suave, seamless, perfumed profile, Thienpont's decision to reduce the amount of new oak used to only 30% makes for even greater purity and expressiveness.

Score: 93 - 95 William Kelley, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com

The 2022 Nénin is terrific. Pliant, rich and creamy in the glass, the 2022 is a formidable example of the year. Soft, plush contours wrap around a core of red/purplish berry fruit. Touches of blood orange, mint, cinnamon and rose petal lend nuance to this sensual, alluring Pomerol from the Delon family. The 2022 is beautifully done.

Score: 92 - 94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com Maturity: 2028-2042

A juicy and crunchy red with blackberry, chocolate, hazelnut. Mocha. Full to medium body with a creamy texture. Lots going on here. 64% merlot and 36% cabernet franc.

Score: 94 - 95 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com

A blend of 64% Merlot and 36% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Nenin delivers aromas of cherries, violets, sweet berries and rose petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy palate that's rich, succulent and seamless, its ample core of fruit largely concealing its sweet, powdery tannins.

Score: 93 - 95 William Kelley, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com

Cloves, smoked coffee bean and liqourice, adding gourmet layers to the damson and black cherry fruit. Picking September 1 to 23.

Score: 89 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

The 2022 Nénin was picked September 1-23, a relatively long harvest. The nose is quite opulent with black cherries, boysenberry and a touch of fi. Generous and bold. The palate is medium-bodied with dark chocolate and espresso-laced black fruit, granular tannins, and well-judged acidity. The 39% new oak needs a few months to be assimilated. Composed and quite persistent this should drink well after 3-5 years.

Score: 91 - 93 Neal Martin, Vinous.com Maturity: 2027-2045

Ripe black cherries, red plums, spice, dried herbs, and chocolate all emerge from the 2022 Château Nenin, an incredibly ripe, sexy, full-bodied Pomerol revealing a broad, opulent mid-palate and velvety tannins. Based on 64% Merlot and 36% Cabernet Franc, this is another concentrated, inky-hued, powerful 2022 that's going to demand bottle age.

Hide the tasting notes

The 2022 La Petite Eglise is quite dense and inward at this stage. The Cabernet Franc is especially dominant today, both in the wine's aromatic profile and overall feel. It's a serious second wine that demands at least a few years in the cellar. Time in the glass brings out notable fruit richness as the Merlot gains volume to match the aromatic presence and structure of the Franc.

Score: 92 - 94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com Maturity: 2028-2042

There will only be some 4,700 bottles of the 2022 La Petite Eglise, a cuvée that combines some younger-vine fruit with two dedicated parcels, one located next to Pomerol's church, the other by the château of La Fleur-Pétrus. Offering up aromas of cherries, sweet berries, incense, dark chocolate and petals, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with a suave, seamless, elegant profile, retaining a bright core of fruit and refined tannins in this warm vintage.

Score: 92 William Kelley, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com

This is an impressive Petite Eglise, has a sweet subtle spicing, lovely black pepper and great juice. Slate, black chocolate, espresso, mandarin peel, so many layers, delicious. 34hl/h yields. Harvest August 31 (earliest ever) to September 9, 60% new oak. Noemie Durantou winemaker.

Score: 93 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux Maturity: 2026-2040

The 2022 La Petite Eglise was picked from 31 August to 9 September and was aged in 60% new oak. It has a pure bouquet with dark berry fruit, pressed iris flower and light loamy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with seductive black berries and strawberries laced with white pepper. It's harmonious and sensual on the finish. Superb.

Score: 92 - 94 Neal Martin, Vinous.com Maturity: 2027-2040

The second wine of the château (although it comes from the same parcels each year) is solid and should easily be an outstanding wine. Based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 La Petite Eglise has ripe red and black fruits, some graphite, tobacco, and rocky minerality, medium body, supple tannins, and a great finish.

Hide the tasting notes

The 2022 Vieux Château Certan is a wine of tremendous sophistication and polish. I expected to see a more opulent VCC, but the 2022 is surprisingly delicate and nuanced. The blend is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, which means all the Cabernets at the château were used in Grand Vin. Perhaps that explains the wine’s construction, favoring length, persistence and aromatics more than size. Crème de cassis, lavender, spice and licorice hints linger on the super-expressive finish. There’s really not much more to say except that the 2022 is magical. “Real heat started in June," explained Alexandre Thienpont. “We had 15mm of rain over two days in mid-August that really helped. Even so, yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare, so lower than 2020. Berries weighed less athan a gram and juice yields were low.”

Score: 98 - 100 Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com Maturity: 2032-2062

The freshness and dynamic sense to the wine is so surprising. Minerally and salty. It's full yet racy. Black ink and oyster shell. Excellent length. 25% cabernet franc, 5% cabernet sauvignon and the rest, merlot.

Score: 98 - 99 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com

A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon (very similar to the 2019), the 2022 Vieux Château Certan is a magical wine of exemplary harmony and balance. Offering up complex aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with notions of exotic spices, licorice, iris, violets and loamy soil, it's full-bodied, supple and seamless, its sweet structuring tannins entirely concealed by a multidimensional core of pure, vibrant fruit. This sensual, perfumed Pomerol is likely to rank alongside the 2019 and 2016 in the pantheon of recent Vieux Château Certan vintages.

Score: 97 - 99 William Kelley, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com

Firm tannic frame, with ink, graphite, violet flowers and red roses, even hints of black truffles at this young age, a sign of the exuberance of the vintage and one that will no doubt increase with age. A little less Cabernet Franc in the blend than usual because they have one plot uprooted right now. The aromatics are explosing, but things are more serious on the palate, with grip and austerity, and it will need a good eight to ten years in bottle to soften. Beautiful nutmeg and clove spice, with a mouthwatering finish. 35hl/h yield. 65% new oak. Oldest vines date back to 1958. 75% new oak

Score: 96 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

The 2022 Vieux Château Certan was picked between 6 and 21 September at 35hL/ha and matured in two-thirds new oak. Alexandre Thienpont thinks it is a combination of the 2019 and 2020 and said that the Cabernet Sauvignon, from younger vines, lowered the alcohol (14.4%) and lent perfume. The aromatics are spellbinding with brilliant delineation and a surfeit of freshness. Blackberry, briary, crushed stone and light iris flower scents, vivacious and so energetic. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, very supple tannins, and lashings of cracked black pepper, pencil box and tobacco infusing the black fruit. As Thienpont said, persistent on the finish and gently lacquering the vines. The Cabernet is very expressive this year and so while it is a real Left Bank/Right Bank hybrid, it is, at the same time, quintessentially Pomerol. Chapeau Alexandre et Guillaume Thienpont.

Score: 97 - 99 Neal Martin, Vinous.com Maturity: 2032-2075

One of the wines of the vintage, without a doubt, the 2022 Vieux Château Certan comes from healthy yields of 38 hectoliters per hectare and is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Jaw-droppingly good in every sense, its deep purple hue is followed by a massive array of black cherries, violets, red plums, chocolate, and violets. This carries to a full-bodied Pomerol with a voluptuously layered mouthfeel, perfect tannins, and a great, great finish. I never find Vieux Château Certan to have the overt power and structure of Petrus, or the feminine elegance of Conseillante, but it's unrivaled in its texture, seamlessness, and purity. If this doesn't put a smile on your face, I don't know what will. And I'll be a buyer.
